The congregations of Hornby United Church, built in 1856, and Ashgrove United Church, built in 1860, amalgamated on January 1, 1968 to form Hillcrest United Church.

The official opening of Hillcrest United Church was held on April 27, 1969. The service was conducted by the Rev. Keith Hawkes, who was our minister through this transition period. Dr. Robert McClure, the moderator of The United Church of Canada, was guest speaker. The joining of the two congregations was now complete, and the history of Hillcrest had begun. Rev. M.E. Lynne Adams Curtain succeeded Rev. Hawkes in 1971. She was followed by Rev. John W.E. Griffin in 1974. Rev Jean Stirret Jones was our minister from 1987 to 1996. Rev Ken Jackson came to us in 1996 and stayed on until 201 . Deb Hopper came and filled in and she stayed with us for almost a year and a half. Finally settling upon following a path that led us to Jan McCormick, Lay Sudent Minister. Through the years the leadership and pastoral care continues to be a true blessing to this Hillcrest Church Family.

In 2002, an addition to the church was completed, providing new offices and meeting rooms. Used by an after school program, YODA (Youth Overcoming Depression and Anxiety), sewing and rug hooking groups, Scouts Canada, Girl Guides of Canada, 4H, Local Agricultural Meeting, local AMMA Foundation of Canada, Psalm 100 Music and a Tai Chi Group make regular use of the space.

In 2014 Bethel United was sold and members joined Hillcrest to become a new chapter in the life of Hillcrest United Church.

Today Hillcrest is still an active church that blends rural and urban, long-time resident and new comer in a caring, friendly atmosphere. We have a Baseball Team, Women’s Fellowship Group, Coffee Hours, Eat and Meets, Annual Lunches, and Women’s Institute meetings are regularly held. Bible studies, Prayer Shawl and Coffee days are held regularly and there continues to be a safe place for youth to gather and connect with each other. We continue to work to help those in need in our own community and around the world. From local food banks, Darling Home for Kids, Sleeping Children Around the World, the SHARE Organization, Links to Care and many more including helping to support our youth pursue their goals and mission work of helping others around the world. We look forward to many more years of worship and work together.
